Reading Place: Lineage & modernity in San Francisco Bay Area

Sandhya presented a paper at the 16th International Docomomo Conference held at Tokyo, Japan in 2020+1. Included in the conference proceedings titled “Inheritable Resilience: Sharing values of Global Modernities”, the publication is edited by Ana Tostoes and Yoshiyuki Yamana. Through case studies of selected BART stations, Sandhya’s research identifies attributes of a regional design approach embedded in the historic architecture of the San Francisco Bay Area. The selected methodology could be implemented to revitalize the value and the vitality of this sustainable design approach. Criteria include attributes of connection that led to recognition of design principles relating to each unique context. Place making strategies are embodied in the Bay Tradition as well as the Modern Movement, reflecting aspects of local and global modernism.
