El Campanil

El Campanil describes the conception and design of the unique Bell Tower in Oakland's college campus, created by architect Julia Morgan. As a reinforced concrete building, the simplicity of its architecture is matched by the innovative technology of its time. The bell tower is considered one of the most significant and influential buildings in Julia Morgan’s architecture portfolio. The essay was submitted as part of the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) Archipedia, an authoritative online encyclopedia of the U.S. built environment. It includes peer-reviewed essays on the most significant and iconic buildings from each state. The essay has been included in the series “Women In Architecture”.
