Solar Orientation
This 2600 sq ft new two storey home, takes advantage of passive solar orientation by arranging family spaces around a south facing courtyard and allowing year round light into the interior. The inventive juxtaposition of programmatic rooms converts them into a composition of serene, warm and sequential spaces. The formal living, dining and guest suite lead from the tall entrance lobby and the combined kitchen, nook and family room are placed at the rear, opening onto the verandah and backyard. The house sits angularly along the diagonal of a triangular 7000 sq ft corner site, wider at the street edge and narrow towards the companion cottage at the rear, working around groves of oak and redwood trees.
Inside to Outside
The client emphasized use of outdoor spaces as an integral part of their lifestyle. The courtyard becomes a private retreat tucked away from the more public front and back yard. A verandah wraps around the rear with an outdoor kitchen, a terrace off the second floor master suite and wide balconies lead from kids’ bedrooms, connecting to the landscape visually and physically.
Modern Finishes
House features state of the art equipment and amenities in its five bedrooms, four bathrooms, living, dining and kitchen with island and counter seating overlooking the family room. Granite countertops, 5/8 thick gypsum board, sprayed insulation and wood flooring add warmth, radiance and comfort to this Palo Alto haven.
